How Many Pages Should a KDP Coloring Book Have? 233 Amazon Books, Counted
Nov 4, 2026 · Rey Midas · Counted from Amazon.com product pages that day
About 100 pages: 50 designs, each on its own sheet with a blank back, plus a title page. On November 4, 2026 we opened the top 10 Amazon books for 26 coloring book niches. Among them were 26 independently published newcomers: books with under 100 ratings that ranked under #100,000 in Books. They ran 76 to 123 pages, median 103.5, and 24 of the 26 had 80 to 110 pages. Half of them put a design count in the title, and the most common number by far was 50.
For an 8.5 × 11″ black-ink book, KDP charges the same to print 24 pages as 110, so going from 40 pages to 100 costs you nothing per copy. Disclosure: we sell a coloring book generator, and this count is why we raised it to 50 designs the same day. The numbers are below for you to check.

How to read it. 231 distinct books with a page count, from the first ten organic coloring books on each of 26 Amazon searches. Independently published is what Amazon lists as the publisher for most KDP books. Newcomers selling have under 100 ratings and a Best Sellers Rank under #100,000 in all of Amazon Books. The three books under 24 pages are 16-page books from traditional publishers. KDP won’t print a paperback that short.
Median page count, by kind of book
| Books | Count | Median pages | Middle half |
|---|---|---|---|
| All 231 books with a page count | 231 | 96 | 64–106 |
| Traditional publishers | 111 | 80 | 64–104 |
| Independently published (KDP) | 120 | 102 | 86–108 |
| Independent, ranked under #100,000 | 69 | 103 | 91–108 |
| Independent newcomers selling | 26 | 103.5 | 100–106 |
| Independent, ranked #100,000 or worse, or unranked | 51 | 100 | 80–104 |
Traditional publishers run shorter (median 80). Exactly 64 pages is their most common length: 34 of their 111 books, 17 from Dover (which publishes Creative Haven) and 11 from New Seasons, on 14 of the 26 searches. Independent books that sell cluster around 100 to 108 (middle half 91–108, and 100–106 for the newcomers). In the kids searches (trucks, dinosaurs, unicorns, toddler, kawaii) the 17 independent books ranked under #100,000 had a median of 104 pages. In the adult and style searches the 52 such books had a median of 103.
50 designs is the number in the titles
Of the 26 independent newcomers that were selling, 13 name a design count in the title. Ten say 50 (one of them “over 50”):
- New 2026 Christmas Adult Coloring Book: 50 Simple Christmas-Themed Large Print Coloring Pages, 102 pages, 28 ratings, #999 in Books
- Squishy Cuties: Bold & Easy Coloring Book | 50 Adorable Squishy Toys, 109 pages, 8 ratings, #3,816
- Big Trucks Coloring Book for Toddlers Ages 2–6: 50 Big and Easy Truck Designs, 105 pages, 14 ratings, #36,764
- Big Monster Trucks Coloring Book: 50 Easy and Fun Coloring Pages for Kids Ages 3 and Up, 101 pages, 7 ratings, #30,133
- The Great Dinosaur Coloring Book: 50 Detailed Scenes and Fascinating Facts for Kids Ages 4–8, 106 pages, 21 ratings, #72,694
The other five that say 50 are a second Christmas book, a vehicles book for toddlers, a large-print book for seniors, a flower book and a unicorn book. The other three numbers were 60 (a 123-page book for seniors), 40 (84 pages) and 30+ (76 pages). The other 13 titles name no design count. Those run 86 to 109 pages.
Why about 100 pages
- Blank backs. Markers bleed through paper, so adult and KDP coloring books usually print one design per sheet and leave the back empty. Each design takes two pages: 50 designs, a title page and its blank back come to 102.
- Printing is flat up to 110 pages. For an 8.5 × 11″ black-ink book KDP charges $2.84 from 24 to 110 pages, then $3.04 at 120, $3.55 at 150 and $4.40 at 200. At $9.99 that is about $3.15 a sale up to 110 pages and $1.59 at 200 (royalty at every price and length). Up to 110 pages, more designs cost you nothing per copy.
- Price. 63 of the 120 independent books were listed at exactly $9.99, the median. That is the lowest price that earns KDP’s 60% royalty. At the same price, a 40-page book offers fewer designs than the 100-page books it competes with.

What page count won’t do
It won’t make a book sell. The 51 independent books in this count that ranked #100,000 or worse, or had no rank at all, also ran about 100 pages (median 100). About 100 pages is the norm, and this count can’t say what makes one such book sell and another not. Our niche count covers the niche and our top-100 count covers the competition. This is also one day on Amazon.com, page 1 only, which shows mostly books that sell. It says little about the many that sell nothing.
How we counted
- Amazon.com, Books department, delivery set to a US ZIP code (Nashville), November 4, 2026 around 16:10 UTC. 26 searches, including “mandala coloring book for adults” and “truck coloring book for kids”, page 1 only. No result was labeled Sponsored.
- For each search we opened the first ten organic books and read the page count, publisher and Best Sellers Rank from the product page. We kept books whose titles say coloring and name the theme (for the four style and age searches, such as cozy and toddler, any coloring book counted), and dropped sticker, velvet-art and Kindle items and one licensed fan book. Books on more than one search page count once: 233 books, 231 with a page count.
- “Independently published” is the publisher Amazon shows for most KDP books. A few KDP authors publish under their own imprint name, so the independent count is a floor.
The Coloring Book Machine turns a one-line theme into 50 line-art designs, each a different scene, and lays them out as a 102-page KDP interior PDF (8.5 × 11″ or 8.5 × 8.5″, title page, blank backs) plus front-cover art. You still look the pages over before you upload, and you answer yes to KDP’s AI question. Commercial use included. One-time payment, no subscription.

How many pages should a KDP coloring book have?
About 100. On November 4, 2026 we counted the top 10 Amazon books for 26 coloring niches. The 26 independently published books with under 100 ratings that ranked under #100,000 in Books ran 76 to 123 pages, median 103.5, and 24 of them had 80 to 110 pages. That is room for about 50 designs printed one per sheet with a blank back, plus a title page.
How many designs should a coloring book have?
Most often 50. Of the 26 independently published coloring books with under 100 ratings that ranked under #100,000 on Amazon (top 10 of 26 niche searches, Nov 4, 2026), 13 name a design count in the title and 10 of them say 50, one as “over 50” (the others say 60, 40 and 30+). With a blank back behind every design, 50 designs plus a title page and its back is 102 pages.
What is the minimum page count for a KDP coloring book?
KDP’s paperback minimum is 24 pages. With a title page and blank backs, 11 designs make exactly 24. Only 3 of the 120 independently published books in our count had fewer than 50 pages, and none of them ranked under #100,000.
Do more pages cost more to print on KDP?
Not up to 110. For an 8.5 × 11 inch black-ink book, KDP charges $2.84 for anything from 24 to 110 pages, then more per page: $3.04 at 120 pages, $3.55 at 150 and $4.40 at 200. At $9.99 a 110-page book earns about $3.15 a sale and a 200-page book about $1.59.
Should coloring book pages be single-sided?
Yes for markers: a drawing on the back of another drawing gets bled on. Printing one design per sheet with the back left blank is standard for adult and KDP coloring books, which is why a 50-design book is about 100 pages.
Will a 100-page coloring book sell better than a 40-page one?
Page count alone doesn’t make a book sell. The independent books that ranked worse than #100,000 also ran about 100 pages (median 100). But it is what independent sellers compete with: of the 26 independently published books with under 100 ratings that ranked under #100,000, 24 had 80 to 110 pages and none had fewer than 76. A 40-page book at the same $9.99 gives buyers fewer designs than those books.
