Making a coloring book for KDP?
The Coloring Book Machine draws 10–30 line-art pages from a theme you type, plus cover art and a title page, and hands you a KDP interior PDF (8.5 × 11" or 8.5 × 8.5", padded to KDP's 24-page minimum). Try a page free; the full book is $9.99 one time, no subscription.

- Spine width = page count × paper thickness: 0.002252" (black ink, white paper), 0.0025" (cream), 0.002252" (standard color), 0.002347" (premium color).
- Cover width = 0.125" bleed + back cover width + spine width + front cover width + 0.125" bleed.
- Cover height = 0.125" + trim height + 0.125".
- Pixels = inches × 300 (KDP's 300 DPI minimum).
Worked example: a 6 × 9" novel with 300 pages on cream paper has a 300 × 0.0025 = 0.75" spine, so the cover is 0.125 + 6 + 0.75 + 6 + 0.125 = 13" wide and 9 + 0.25 = 9.25" tall, or 3,900 × 2,775 pixels.

FAQ
How do I calculate my KDP paperback cover size?
Full cover width = 0.125" bleed + back cover width + spine width + front cover width + 0.125" bleed. Height = 0.125" + trim height + 0.125". Spine width = page count × the paper thickness: 0.002252" for black ink on white paper, 0.0025" for cream, 0.002252" for standard color and 0.002347" for premium color. Example: a 6 × 9" book with 300 cream pages has a 0.75" spine and a 13" × 9.25" cover.
What size should my cover image be in pixels?
KDP asks for at least 300 DPI, so multiply each inch by 300. A 13" × 9.25" cover is 3,900 × 2,775 pixels. The calculator shows the pixel size for your book and the template downloads at 300 DPI.
Can I put text on the spine?
Only if your book has 80 pages or more (KDP says more than 79). Spine text also needs 0.0625" of space from each fold line. Below 80 pages, leave the spine blank or use a color only.
Where does the barcode go?
If you use a free KDP ISBN, KDP prints the barcode for you in a 2" × 1.2" white box in the lower right corner of the back cover. Keep text and important art out of that box or the file can be rejected.
How much will I earn per sale?
On Amazon.com, KDP pays 60% of the list price minus printing cost when you list at $9.99 or more, and 50% minus printing cost at $9.98 or less. Black-ink books of 24–110 pages cost $2.30 to print at regular trim sizes ($2.84 at large trims). So a 50-page 8.5 × 11" coloring book (a large trim, $2.84 to print) earns $2.15 at $9.98 and $3.15 at $9.99.
Is a coloring book a large trim size?
Yes. KDP counts any trim wider than 6.12" or taller than 9" as large, so 8.5 × 11" and 8.5 × 8.5" coloring books pay the large-trim printing cost: $2.84 for 24–110 black-ink pages.
